One of the most economically viable cash crop that can be grown by rural farmers is oyster mushrooms. This paper by Penn State Extension discusses the theory behind and production methods commonly used in oyster mushroom production in the US. The papers attached above are more relevant to mushroom growing in Zimbabwe. This Indian version from 2004 details how it is done in India. There are some significant common threads in both articles. A few very useful videos are also available online from other growers, and they can include:
1. Mushroom adventures (10 mins)
2. Mushrooms for slow food (12 mins)
3. Growing mushroom in your own garden kit (12 mins)
4. Growing mushroom on the cheap (7 mins)
5. Growing mushrooms from spawn (includes prep, 17 mins)
6. Growing mushrooms (in-depth video, 45 mins)
7. Growing mushrooms in a bottle (12 mins)
8. Growing mushrooms in an outside vegetable bed (8 mins)
9. Growing mushrooms from coffee grounds (Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3) - three separate links.
10. Growing mushrooms on sawdust (8 mins)
11. Preparing popcorn spawn jars (10), Preparing rye grain spawn (10), Inoculation (10), the shake (15 mins)
12.
Our objective is to use these resources to come up with a method that can be easily adapted by rural farmers. We are currently experimenting with different substrates and growing conditions in Zimbabwe.
